The Ciacci Piccolomini D’Aragona estate is spectacularly located in the rolling Tuscan hills in the south east of Montalcino, beside the medieval village of Castenuovo dell'Abate.
Grapes for this wine are sourced from 8 hectares of vineyards, 240 - 360 meters above sea level, with medium, marl soils. Fermentation is in a mixture of temperature controlled stainless steel and concrete tanks. The wine is aged in Slovenian oak barrels for 2 years, then for a further 8 months in bottle before release.
The history of the estate can be traced back to the 17th Century, when it housed the palace of the Bishop of Montalcino. The palace and estate were acquired by the Ciacci family in 1877. In the early 1900's Elda Ciacci married Count Alberto Piccolomini of Aragon, and the palace was renamed Palazzo Ciacci Piccolomini d ' Aragon. The last member of the family died in 1985, when the estate passed to Giuseppe Bianchini who had been responsible for the wine business for many years. Today, the business is run by Giuseppe's children Paolo and Lucia.
