When a group of businessmen, part of a gastronomic society from the Basque country (Txoko) found themselves unsatisfied by what wines were on offer to them they decided to setup their own winery.
Beronia, named after a celtic tribe called the ‘Berones’ that inhabited La Rioja was established in 1973. One of the key requirements to the design of the bodega was a room that could host the Txoko and overlook the winery. We were lucky enough to be invited to eat in the tower and were treated to some fabulous Cordero Lechal (milk fed lamb).
Technical director Matias Calleja is key to the Beronia style. Over 30 years with Beronia Matias has covered most roles in the business. His philosophies and innovation have seen Beronia develop a character and style driven by vineyard selection and barrel management. Matias’ respect for the environment has shows in the fact that they can boast over 50 hectares of more than 60 year old vines and an average age of 30 years across the 900 hectares they manage.
One of Matias' innovations has been to focus on single varietal wines. The Beronia Coleccion range is made up of a special production Tempranillo, Mazuelo Reserva and Graciano. We don’t currently stock any of the single varietal range that Beronia make but if you are interested please get in touch.
