Manto Negro 90%; Syrah 10%
Manto Negro is a traditional Mallorcan grape, accounting for approximately 20% of Mallorcan wine production. The grapes for this wine are from a single plot with very stony, loamy clay soils containing a high proportion of iron oxide, 150m above sea level. The vineyard is also planted with old carob trees. Indigenous plant growth is encouraged during the winter months to enhance soil bacteria.
Grapes are hand picked, macerated for 20 - 25 days in French oak followed by semi carbonic then malolactic fermentation. After 9 months in the fermentation oak foudres, the wine is aged for a further 9 months in stainless steel and 6 months in bottle before release.
4Kilos was set up in 2006 by winemaker Francesc Grimalt and musician Sergio Caballero. Their vineyards are in prime locations across the island and produce traditional local and international varieties. They place great emphasis on finding the right geographical location and soil for each variety of grape.
The name 4 Kilos comes from their initial investment in this enterprise - 4 million pesetas!
