Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo) 100%
Pintia is located in the DO Toro region, on the banks of the Duero River. This area experiences extremes of weather: very cold in winter, intense heat in summer. Soils are complex, containing large quantities of small stones.
2014 started cold, with larger than average volumes of rainfall. This continued into Spring, delaying growth and budding of the vines. Summer was warm with several periods of rain. August was very hot, which combined with the good water reserves prompted the development of high quality fruit, with great flavour and good acidity.
Grapes were picked by hand, then on arrival at the winery, chilled for 12 hours. Grapes were sorted by hand then crushed before a 5 day cold maceration period and fermentation in oak vats. Malolactic fermentation took place during the 12 months aging period in oak barrels (70% French, 30% American.) The wine is aged for a further 12 months in bottle before release.
Pintia is a project of the Álvarez family, owners of Vega Sicilia, the renowned Ribera del Duero wine maker. They were convinced of the potential of the Toro region, 100 kilometers downstream, so began by acquiring old vineyards in good locations. Construction of the winery began in 2000 and was completed in 2006. During this time experiments were carried out, using grapes from different locations and differing winemaking techniques and timings. The conclusion was a process that conserves the fruit flavours whilst adding sophistication and complexity to produce a truly exceptional wine.
