Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Syrah and Merlot.
Blecua is an inspiring project that Vinas del Vero have worked on for the last decade. The simple theory is that selection is key. Starting in the vineyard, the best sites are selected and earmarked, these vineyards are characterised by different microclimates and will be picked at the optimum ripness.
Each vineyard is fermented separately in French oak vats and then transferred to new barrels for malolactic fermentation. The barrels vary in toast and are sourced from different cooperages. After 8 months of aging the best barrels are selected. In this vintage two barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon and one of each Tempranillo, Syrah and Merlot were selected and blended then returned to the barrels for a further 12 months.
When we visited in 2012 they started with 50 barrels which were wittled down to 5 for the final selection. This selective process is why they manage to make such an amazing wine.
Subtle aromas of cigar, oak and chocolate with dense red berry fruit are a signature of this wine.
